Our Story:

Hill Country Daily Bread Ministries (HCDBM) has fine-tuned a unique and successful model which blends modern food banking with intentional multi-layered mentoring programs for adults and at-risk children, case management, training, and collaborative partnerships designed to break the cycle of poverty in the name of Christ.

The Vision

THE VISION

In 2000 David and Agnes Hubbard envisioned a ministry to alleviate suffering, fight poverty, and transform the lives of the poor and needy through the love of Christ in the rural, underserved Texas Hill Country and surrounding areas including northern Bexar County.

David and Agnes saw the importance of uniting and equipping people to look at the whole person- their spiritual, physical and emotional needs. They recognized that to address persistent poverty effectively, you must deal with underlying issues and give people opportunities to know Jesus Christ, the Redeemer and Reconciler of all things. They were committed that HCDBM act as a toolbox for the expression of time, treasure and talent, helping people answer the call and responsibility to serve their neighbor in need.

The Beginning

THE BEGINNING

HCDBM was incorporated in June 2003 and received its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status on January 7, 2004.

Armed only with a vision, the Hubbards saw the first miracle of God’s provision after a friend allowed them to use her 500 square foot garage located on Old San Antonio Rd. Three weeks later God provided a donated 8’ x 10’ cooler to outfit the small building, and a 20-foot Ryder truck to pick up donated food. Now they were ready with a handful of dedicated volunteers and a few generous suppliers who donated food and other essentials. Beginning with three local churches that agreed to become the first mentoring church partners, they began serving 30 impoverished families.

The Impact

THE IMPACT

HCDBM is now the regional catalyst that brings resources together with community and partner programs to create pathways out of poverty in the name of Christ. Our unique partnerships with area congregations, civic organizations, businesses, nonprofit organizations and the community at large, have enabled us to serve eight rural underserved counties, including Bandera, Northern Bexar, Comal, Gillespie, Kendall, Kerr, Medina, and Uvalde.

Thanks to passionate and caring communities, generous donors, and the grace of God, HCDBM now impacts over 82,000 people and distributes millions of dollars worth of food and basic resources each year through its combined mentoring and food bank programs to families individuals and non profit partners.

The Pursuit

THE PURSUIT

The ministry had to move from the garage by 2002. From 2002 through 2015 the ministry operated out of a collection of rented warehouse space. In 2008 they recognized the need for a permanent home and space to accommodate the needs of a growing region.

Through the generosity of individual donors, foundations and businesses together with dedicated volunteers, the ministry completed The Uniting Campaign. In 2015, a 40,000 square foot warehouse, office building, amphitheater and outdoor area was finished and HCDBM finally had a permanent home!

As programming for at-risk children and numbers of church mentoring partnership have increased, the need for a training facility and a permanent home for the Stand By Me At-Risk Mentoring Program became critical. In 2018 plans were made for an 8,000 square foot multipurpose building and a 4,000 square foot building for the at-risk student mentoring program (Stand by Me).

The Stand By Me building was completed in September 2025 and the Vision Training Center is expected to be complete by February 2025.
